Buck Ridge Burn is a proud supporter of Tarahumara Ministries, a church-based organization whose mission it is to support the desperately poor Tarahumara Indians of the Copper Canyon in Chihuahua, Mexico. The Tarahumara Ministry is an initiative that was born many years ago when the Mexican media showed scenes of Tarahumara Indians dying of hunger and hypothermia in the Copper Canyon of the Sierra Mountains. The missionaries travel frequently to remote villages deep in the canyon in order to build churches, facilitating the needs of the people by bringing food, medicine, and clothing on a regular basis.
Participants in the 2018 Buck Ridge Burn donated close to $200 to this ministry. In September, the Race Director, Jen Henry was able to travel to the canyon with a team of doctors and nurses to personally deliver the donation.
What better way to say thank you to the forest than to help support the organization that maintains and protects it? Buck Ridge Burn has been able to donate hundreds of dollars worth of trail tools over the years. Starting in 2017, we have and take the opportunity to add to Michaux funds directly by donating to the Pennsylvania Parks and Forests Foundation whose "mission is to inspire stewardship of Pennsylvania’s state parks and forests through public engagement in volunteerism, education and recreation".
We are blessed with a fantastic state park to use for our race headquarters. Buck Ridge Burn and its participants make a donation every year to the Friends of Pine Grove Furnace State Park whose mission it is to "keep history alive and promote the educational and recreational programs of the park and surrounding areas through special events and trail development while protecting the park’s natural resources."
The fine folk of the Citizen's Fire Company No. 1 are a steadying and secure presence at Buck Ridge Burn every year. As a thank you for their steadfast dedication and for the invaluable service they provide to our community, Buck Ridge Burn donates a large portion of the race proceeds to them every year.
